Grizzlies are the larger and more dangerous cousins of black bears. They are found in North America. A large shoulder hump and long claws are their most distinguishing features. Their color ranges from various shades of brown and reddish brown to silver-tipped or even black. Adult males can weigh as much as 1000 pounds. Grizzlies hibernate in caves or hollow trees. In mid-winter tiny one pound cubs are born in the den where they are nursed by their mother until they emerge in the spring. She will continue to nurse them and teach them to find food until they are two to three years old. A mother grizzly will defend her cubs ferociously and is extremely dangerous.
