These large white carnivores are found in all areas north of the Arctic Circle. Males weight over 1000 pounds and females about half as much. In January their one pound cubs are born in underground snowcaves which will be their dens until late April. The mother bear has been fasting for the past eight months and she will now leave her den with the cubs in search of food. Their main diet consists of seals, especially newborn pups. She will care for her cubs, usually twins, until they are two years old and can fend for themselves. 8" long, Northern Babies Collection. | |||||||||||
