The largest and most dangerous of the bear family are Polar Bears. They are found in the areas north of the Arctic Cirlce including Canada, Alaska and Asia. They have longer necks and smaller heads than other bears and their large paws have special foot-pads which prevent them from slipping on the ice. Males weigh more than 1000 pounds and are two to three times heavier than females. Their tiny one pound cubs are born in January in their snow caves, which will be their dens until late April. The mother bear, who had been fasting for the past eight months, will now leave her den in search of food. She will care for her cubs until they are two years old. Polar Bears prefer to travel and hunt on sea-ice, where they wait for seals to come up for air at their breathing holes. Young seals make up the bears' main diet, although they can also swim under the ice to catch fish. | |||||||||
