| Coyotes are members of the dog family and are related to wolves and jackals. They are found throughout North America in deserts and mountain regions. Those living in higher elevations are much larger than desert coyotes and their fur is darker and more luxurious. They have a keen sense of smell and acute hearing and they can outrun most of their prey. Their diet in the wild consists of small rodents, insects, reptiles and berries, as well as fish and carrion. An average of six pups are born in their den in early spring. The parents care for them and teach them hunting skills until they can fend for themselves after the first year. Coyotes howl at night to communicate or to define their territory. When they show aggression, they will bark and hold their bushy tails horizontally. The howl of the coyote is sometimes referred to as "The Song of the West" or "Song of the Little Wolf". | |||||||||||
