| Chipmunks are colorful little rodents that belong to the squirrel family. They can be found in many parts of Canada and the United States. There are a number of different species, but all of them have the characteristic white and dark stripes on their backs and near the eyes. They are much smaller than squirrels and their tails are very long and less bushy. They build elaborate burrow systems, often more than three yards long, with various chambers and tunnels. Their sleeping chamber is kept clean of waste, husks and shells, which are stored in a special refuse tunnel. They sleep in the sleeping chamber through the winter and this is where their four or five babies are born. Chipmunks eat nuts, fruit and seeds as well as mushrooms, grubs and insects. In early autumn they carry food to the tunnels in their bulging cheek pouches and hoard a very large supply of it for the long winter. 6" long. | |||||||||
